  1. In biology, regrowth of a new organ or tissue
  2. after the loss or removal of the original. It
  3. is common in plants, where a new individual
  4. can often be produced from a `cutting' of the
  5. original. In animals, regeneration of major
  6. structures is limited to lower organisms;
  7. certain lizards can regrow their tails if
  8. these are lost, and new flatworms can grow
  9. from a tiny fragment of an old one. In
  10. mammals, regeneration is limited to the
  11. repair of tissue in wound healing and the
  12. regrowth of peripheral nerves following
  13. damage.
